(ENG+ITA) My favorite part of Christmas time is with no doubt Christmas music. It wouldn’t feel like Christmas without some festive music. I don’t consider myself religious, so I definitely don’t celebrate it for its true, religious meaning. But there’s something about its atmosphere that hooks me up every year, and gives me the nostalgic but exciting feeling of a year coming to an end and a new one that is just around the corner, waiting for us.

Christmas comes with a huge variety of songs, and I’ve been trying to put together my little playlist to set the proper Christmas mood, trying to mix traditional and alternative together.
We have no tree and very minimal decor in our apartment, so music and a few scented soy candles set the right mood.

So here’s what I’ve been listening to so far:

Quello che preferisco maggiormente del Natale è sicuramente la musica. Non sarebbe Natale senza un po’ di musica “a tema”. Non mi considero più credente, quindi non festeggio più il Natale secondo il suo vero significato religioso. Ma c’è qualcosa della sua atmosfera che mi affascina puntualmente ogni anno, e che mi da quella nostalgica ma emozionante sensazione di sapere che un anno sta finendo e che uno è proprio dietro l’angolo, che aspetta solo noi. 

Il Natale arriva con una varietà di canzoni diverse, ed io ho cercato di creare la mia piccola playlist per creare l’atmosfera giusta, cercando di mescolare tradizionale ed alternativo insieme. Non abbiamo l’albero nel nostro appartamento e poche decorazioni minimali, quindi la musica giusta e qualche candela profumata sono quello che ci vuole. 

Ecco che cosa sto ascoltando questo Natale:

 

• Frank Sinatra “A jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra”

Sinatra was my grandpa’s favorite singer. He reminds me of my family and New York, where my mom was born and grew up. I started listening to this album last year, and I kept this “tradition” alive this year too. It is perfect for a cozy night home, with a glass of wine and some scented soy candles, or when baking some festive treats. This album contains some Christmas classic songs, like “Jingle bells”, “Silent night”, “Have yourself a merry little Christmas”, but with that Sinatra’s twist that makes this album the perfect Christmas soundtrack.

Sinatra era il cantante preferito di mio nonno. Ascoltarlo mi ricorda della mia famiglia e di New York, dove mia mamma è nata e cresciuta. Ho iniziato ad ascoltare questo disco l’anno scorso, e ho deciso di mantenere questa piccola “tradizione”. E’ perfetto da ascoltare per una serata a casa, con un bicchiere di vino e delle candele di soia profumate, o mentre si cucinano dei dolcetti natalizi. Quest’album contiene alcuni classici di Natale come “Jingle bells”, “Silent night”, “Have yourself a merry little Christmas”, ma con quel meraviglioso tocco Sinatra che rende questo disco la perfetta colonna sonora per questo periodo. 

• Various artists “The O.C. mix 3: have a very merry Chrismukkah”

Ok, who hasn’t had a major crush on the O.C.’s character of Seth Cohen? He was this cute, sweet, nerdy Californian guy that loved to skate, listen to alternative music and read comic books, played by the actor Adam Brody. Well, since this post is not about how charming Seth Cohen was, I’m gonna talk music. Several soundtracks from the “the O.C.” series were released, and of course a Christmas mix couldn’t miss, “Have a very merry Chrismukkah” (btw, if you don’t know what it is, Chrismukkah is the special holiday Seth made to combine Christmas and Hannukah together because of the mixed religions in his family: his father was Jewish and his mother Protestant). A brief but enjoyable mix of “alternative” songs about Christmas.

Ok, chi non ha avuto una gigantesca cotta per il personaggio di Seth Cohen del telefilm the O.C.? Seth era questo carinissimo, dolce nerd californiano appassionato di skate, musica alternativa e fumetti, interpretato dall’attore Adam Brody. Beh, dato che questo post non riguarda le splendide qualità di Seth Cohen e quanto lui fosse affascinante, mi concentrerò sulla musica. Varie colonne sonore sono state estratte dal telefilm, ed ovviamente non poteva mancare una compilation natalizia, “Have a very merry Chrismukkah” (il Chrismukkah è la speciale festività creata dal personaggio di Seth per combinare Natale ed Hannukah: il padre era Ebreo e la madre Protestante). Un breve ma piacevole alternative mix di canzoni a tema natalizio. 

• Michael Bublé “Christmas”

There’s nothing that screams Christmas to me more than Bublé’s Christmas album at the moment. These are the songs you hear all over the place during Christmas time, but I really can’t get tired of it. I am not a fan of his, but this album is amazing. All the Christmas classics are sung with a perfect pop-swing-retro vibe, making this album THE Christmas album. It sets the perfect mood, bringing me joy, smiles and excitement for these colorful, cheerful upcoming days.

Al momento non c’è nulla che mi grida Natale più del disco natalizio di Michael Bublé. Contiene le canzoni che si sentono praticamente ovunque in questo periodo, ma non riesco a stancarmi. Non sono una fan di Bublé, ma questo album è davvero bellissimo. Tutti i classici natalizi sono interpretati in chiave pop-swing-retro perfettamente bilanciata, rendendo questo disco IL disco di Natale. Crea l’atmosfera perfetta, porta allegria sorrisi e aspettativa per questi coloratissimi e spensierati giorni che stanno per arrivare.
