(ENG/ITA) Considering how much time we all had to spend at home over the last couple of months, I think now it’s clearer than ever which are our own daily habits and routines at home. While I always encourage to make research and be aware of the options available, to make substantial changes towards a more eco friendly lifestyle we need to be fully aware of our routines, habits and needs. Once you got that sorted, there are definitely some things you can start from to make your home more zero waste oriented and more eco friendly. Here they are.

Considerata la quantità di tempo che tutti noi abbiamo passato a casa negli ultimi due mesi circa, penso che ora ci sia più chiaro che mai quali siano le nostre abitudini quotidiane in casa. Purché io cerchi sempre di incoraggiare a fare ricerca e ad essere consapevoli delle opzioni disponibili, credo fermamente che per apportare cambiamenti sostanziali verso uno stile di vita più eco-compatibile dobbiamo essere pienamente consapevoli delle nostre abitudini, azioni ed esigenze di ogni giorno. Una volta assodato questo, ci sono sicuramente alcune cose da cui potete partire per rendere la vostra casa a zero rifiuti e più eco-compatibile. Ecco quali.

Cleaning cloths out of old t-shirts

My partner has some t-shirts that uses exclusively for work, and working as electrician in a small company his t-shirts tend to get absolutely wrecked: holes, staines, rips and what not. When these are clearly too used to be acceptable for him to wear them, we turn them into cleaning cloths that we use around the house when dusting, cleaning glasses and mirrors and various surfaces. Easy, at zero expense and zero waste!
PANNI PER PULIRE IN TESSUTO RICAVATI DA VECCHIE MAGLIETTE. Il mio partner ha delle magliette che usa esclusivamente per il lavoro, e lavorando come elettricista in una piccola azienda le sue magliette tendono a rovinarsi parecchio: buchi, macchie, strappi e quant’altro. Quando queste sono chiaramente troppo usurate per essere accettabili da indossare anche al lavoro, le trasformiamo in panni per la pulizia che usiamo in casa per spolverare, pulire vetri e specchi e superfici varie. Semplice, a costo zero ed a rifiuti zero!

Let the freezer be your best friend

Food waste can be a huge problem in common households. Amongst many other things that you can do to reduce or completely avoid it (you find them all listed in this blog post), your freezer can be one of your best allies in your kitchen. Freezing leftovers, foods you only use half of that might go bad quickly, meals preps, for example, are simple and effective ways of reducing your food waste at home every day.
Lo spreco di cibo può essere comunemente un problema enorme. Tra le tante altre cose che possiamo fare per ridurlo o evitarlo completamente (le trovate tutte elencate in questo post), il vostro freezer può essere uno dei vostri migliori alleati in cucina. Congelare gli avanzi, gli alimenti che usate solo in parte e che potrebbero andare a male entro breve, i vostri pasti della settimana già preparati, ad esempio, sono modi semplici ed efficaci per ridurre i vostri sprechi alimentari.

Reusable baking mat (or just use some oil)

Parchment paper (or baking paper) is very helpful in avoiding foods sticking to baking trays while in the oven. However, it is not exactly the most sustainable option: while being mainly made of paper, it still needs to be chemically treated to be heat resistant and it is disposable (you can use it more than once but that is not always possible). Fully compostable, sustainably made baking paper also exists, but it’s still a disposable product and it’s very expensive. A reusable silicone baking mat is very inexpensive and is a great alternative to parchment paper! We got ours at Ikea for around 5€ and so far used it for baked potatoes, bread, homemade vegan burgers, focaccia, pizza and more and it works very well. If this is also not an option for you, oiling well the baking tray with some vegetable oil is the easiest, most eco friendly option ever.
“CARTA FORNO” RIUTILIZZABILE. La carta carta da forno può essere molto utile per evitare che gli alimenti si attacchino alle teglie da forno. Tuttavia, non è esattamente l’opzione più sostenibile: pur essendo fatta principalmente di carta, deve essere trattata chimicamente per essere resistente al calore ed è monouso (si può anche usare più di una volta, ma questo non sempre è possibile). Esiste anche la carta da forno completamente compostabile, prodotta in modo sostenibile, ma è comunque un prodotto usa e getta ed è molto costosa. Un tappetino in silicone riutilizzabile è invece molto economico ed è un’ottima alternativa alla carta forno! Abbiamo preso il nostro all’Ikea per circa 5€ e finora l’abbiamo usato per patate al forno, pane, burger vegan fatti in casa, focaccia, pizza e altro ancora e funziona molto bene. Se anche questa non è un’opzione che fa per voi, ricordate che oliare bene la teglia con un po’ di olio vegetale è l’opzione più semplice ed ecologica di sempre.

Compost

If you have a garden or small balcony with plants or have access to a communal garden or to organic waste collection, a compost/organic waste bin cannot miss in your household (alongside to the regular recycling bins, of course). When rotting in landfills, food produces methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide: so basically throwing food away in the general waste majorly contributes to climate change. Not to mention that it is a waste of precious resources that can be given back to Mother Earth.
RIFIUTI ORGANICI. Se avete un giardino o un piccolo balcone con piante, o avete accesso a un giardino comune o alla raccolta dei rifiuti organici, non può mancare nella vostra casa un compost/bidone per i rifiuti organici (oltre ovviamente ai normali bidoncini per la raccolta differenziata). Quando marcisce nelle discariche, il cibo produce gas metano, che è un gas molto più potente dell’anidride carbonica: quindi gettare il cibo nei rifiuti in generale contribuisce notevolmente al cambiamento climatico. Per non parlare del fatto che si tratta di uno spreco di risorse preziose che possono essere restituite alla Madre Terra.

Moka pot

If you’re a coffee lover, forget about Keurig and Nespresso machines. Those single use coffee capsules create tons of waste! Moka pot is the simplest, most effective way to enjoy your coffee the zero waste way (don’t forget to compost the grounds afterwards) without missing on taste. Italians do it better, am I right? 😉
MOKA. Se siete amanti del caffè, dimenticatevi le macchinette Keurig e Nespresso. Quelle capsule monouso creano tonnellate di rifiuti! La moka italiana è il modo più semplice ed efficace per gustare il vostro caffè a zero rifiuti (non dimenticate di compostare i fondi dopo) senza perdere in gusto ed aroma. Gli italiani lo fanno meglio, o sbaglio? 😉

Multipurpose glass jars

You don’t have to buy a whole set of pretty mason jars to live in a zero waste household! If you look in your pantry I’m pretty sure you already have tons of jars already: pasta sauce, jam, chocolate spread, beans, olives… make sure to collect them when empty, peel well the label off (boiling water or an oil and baking soda mixture will take off the label and the sticky residues in no time) and repurpose them for as many uses as you like! Bulk food shopping, food containers for fridge or freezer, drinking glasses, containers for various objects or supplies, plant pots.
BARATTOLI MULTIUSO. Non c’è bisogno di comprare un intero set di graziosi vasetti in vetro tutti uguali per vivere in una casa a rifiuti zero! Se guardate nella vostra dispensa sono sicura che di barattoli di vetro ne avete già tanti: sugo per la pasta, marmellata, crema spalmabile al cioccolato, fagioli, olive… assicuratevi di tenerli da parte quando ne finite il contenuto, togliete bene l’etichetta (acqua bollente ed una miscela di olio e bicarbonato di sodio toglierà etichetta e residui di colla in poco tempo) e riutilizzateli come volete! Spesa sfusa, contenitori per alimenti da frigorifero o congelatore, bicchieri, contenitori per oggetti vari, vasi per piantine.

Second hand furniture and (DIY) decor

Berlin is an absolute goldmine when it comes to second hand. On websites like eBay there are tons of pre-owned items on sale, including furniture. One way or the other, over these past few years we furnished a big part of our flat with second hand furniture! Cost effective and super eco-friendly! Plus, it’s a nice way to give your home an extra twist of personality. The same works for home decor. You can make a house feel homy without buying cheap, mass produced products. Use plants, browse the second hand market (like for furniture, check on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, local flea markets) or make your own decor! With just a few inexpensive supplies, for example, we created ourselves a little photo wall for our living room.
Berlino è una miniera d’oro quando si tratta di seconda mano. Su siti web come eBay Piccoli Annunci ci sono tonnellate di oggetti usati in vendita, compresi i mobili. In un modo o nell’altro, in questi ultimi anni abbiamo arredato gran parte del nostro appartamento con mobili di seconda mano! Economico e super ecologico! Inoltre, è un bel modo per dare alla vostra casa un tocco di personalità in più. Lo stesso vale per gli oggetti di decoro della casa. Si può rendere una cosa accogliente e personale senza per forza comprare oggetti prodotti in massa. Usate le piante, controllate cosa offre il mercato dell’usato (come per i mobili, cercate su eBay, Facebook Marketplace, mercati delle pulci locali) o decorate il vostro spazio con cose fatte da voi! Con pochi elementi a basso costo, ad esempio, ci siamo creati un piccola muro fotografico in salotto.

Beware of micro plastics

Did you know that 60% of the garments produced worldwide are made of polyester? And this quantity had doubled since the year 2000. As a result, the biggest source of microplastics in ocean waters come from synthetic fibers released during the washing cycle. When buying clothes, new or second hand, read the labels and be mindful about the type of fabric you’re introducing in your wardrobe, trying to prefer natural fibers. PRODOTTI DA BAGNO E BEAUTY ZERO WASTE. Il bagno può offrire una grande varietà di alternative zero waste, ma merita sicuramente un posto a sé stante perché le cose di cui parlare sono tante. Ma non vi preoccupate: ecco la mia guida completa al bagno zero waste (purtroppo il post è disponibile solo in inglese per ora).

Zero waste grocery shopping kit

To reduce your waste when grocery shopping, all you need to do is be prepared. A small kit to carry with you at all times (to keep in your bag/backpack or car, so you never forget it) will do the trick: a reusable cotton bag for all your shopping, some reusable produce bags and some extra bags of various sizes. You can keep everything in a pouch to keep your kit tidy and organized and take it with you on the go more easily.
KIT ZERO WASTE PER LA SPESA. Per ridurre i propri rifiuti quando si fa la spesa basta non farsi trovare impreparati. Tutto ciò che serve è un piccolo kit da portare sempre con voi (da tenere in borsa/zaino o in macchina, così da non dimenticarlo mai): una borsa di cotone riutilizzabile in cui mettere spesa e acquisti vari, alcune retine riutilizzabili per frutta e verdura e qualche borsa extra di varie dimensioni. Potete tenere tutto quanto chiuso in un astuccio per tenere il vostro kit più in ordine ed organizzato e portarlo con voi più facilmente.

Reusable napkins, handkerchiefs and masks

Forget the disposable paper towels or tissues. Even in times like these, a reusable option is safe to use and allows you to further reduce your waste in your household. Cotton napkins and place mats (or a table cloth, if that’s more your preference) in your kitchen and a stack of handkerchiefs for your sneezes and runny noses work perfectly. If you live with more than one person, you can keep them well separated so you know that you won’t mix them up. Once they need to be changed, throw them in the washing machine and wash them at higher temperatures to disinfect them well (I normally wash them together with bed sheets). Note: since we are required to wear masks in closed public places for the foreseeable future, the same can be said for masks: choose to use reusable, washable ones!!
TOVAGLIOLI, FAZZOLETTI E MASCHERE RIUTILIZZABILI. Dimenticate i tovaglioli di carta o i fazzoletti di carta monouso. Anche in tempi come questi, un’opzione riutilizzabile è sicura da usare e consente di ridurre ulteriormente i rifiuti in casa propria. Tovaglioli e tovagliette in cotone (o una normale tovaglia, se preferite) da usare in cucina ed una pila di fazzoletti per quando dovete soffiarvi il naso sono tutto quello che ci vuole. Se vivete con più di una persona, potete tenerli ben separati in modo da non confonderli. Una volta che avete bisogno di sostituirli, gettateli in lavatrice e lavateli a temperature un po’ più alte per disinfettarli bene (io di solito li lavo insieme ai lenzuoli). Importante, dato che dovremo indossare una mascherina nei luoghi pubblici chiusi per il futuro prossimo, lo stesso vale per le mascherine: sceglietene di riutilizzabili e lavabili!

Steam mop

When we used to live in our old apartment in Berlin Wedding, we used to have carpet floor (and we really hated it). So, to make sure that we could get it as clean and sanitized as possible, we bought a steam mop. It wasn’t very expensive, got the job done and we still use it on hard floors in our current apartment: what’s better than natural power of steam to deeply clean and sanitize a surface? All we need is to fill up with water the little tank and that’s it, the steam mop will do the rest. We even use it to sanitize our armchairs cushions and bed mattress from time to time (there are a couple of microfiber cloths attached that can be changed, washed and reused). Of course, before mopping, we vacuum (unfortunately our vacuum cleaner works with bags, so bagless ones are of course preferable).
Quando vivevamo nel nostro vecchio appartamento a Berlino Wedding, avevamo la moquette in alcune parti della casa (e la odiavamo davvero). Così, per essere sicuri di poterla mantenere il più pulita ed igienizzata possibile, abbiamo comprato una scopa a vapore. Non era troppo costosa e si è rivelata utilissima, la usiamo tuttora per i pavimenti del nostro attuale appartamento: cosa c’è di meglio della forza naturale del vapore per pulire e sanificare una superficie in profondità? Tutto quello che serve è riempire il piccolo serbatoio dell’acqua e questo è tutto, il mop a vapore farà il resto. Lo usiamo anche per disinfettare i cuscini delle poltrone ed il materasso di tanto in tanto (ci sono un paio di panni in microfibra in dotazione che possono essere cambiati, lavati e riutilizzati). Naturalmente, prima di pulire con la scopa a vapore, passiamo l’aspirapolvere (purtroppo il nostro aspirapolvere funziona con i sacchetti, quelli senza sacchetto sono ovviamente preferibili).

DIY plant based milk

Making your own plant based milk is a great way to lower your carbon footprint, reduce your waste and have a nutritious drink too. There are so many varieties you can choose from! Almonds, oat, hemp seeds, cashews, hazelnut, rice… All you need is your main ingredient of choice, a high-speed blender, some water and a strainer (or nut milk mesh bag.) The entire process takes about 1 minute and ensures you fresh, nutritious, completely plant based milk that you can store in your fridge for a couple of days.
Fare il proprio latte vegetale in casa è un modo davvero semplice per abbassare la propria impronta sull’ambiente poiché non contiene sostanze animali di alcun tipo ed ovviamente non genera rifiuti di alcun tipo. Ci sono così tante varietà tra cui scegliere! Mandorle, avena, semi di canapa, anacardi, nocciole, riso… Tutto ciò di cui avete bisogno è il vostro ingrediente principale a scelta, un frullatore ad alta velocità, un po’ d’acqua e un colino (o sacchetto a rete fine). L’intero procedimento richiede circa 1 minuto e può garantire un latte fresco, nutriente, genuino, completamente vegetale e che potrete conservare in frigorifero per un paio di giorni.

Compostable dish washing brush and sponges

When washing the dishes and cleaning around in your kitchen, you can opt for items that are fully compostable! Reusable, washable and compostable sponges are a thing (yay!), so if you think that using fabric cloths for doing the dishes and cleaning around in the kitchen is not for you, you can still rely on the cleaning performance and feel of a sponge that is completely eco friendly and won’t create waste or damage the environment. For the dishes, you can opt for a fully compostable dish washing brush, to which you only have to change the brush head when used up. Results guaranteed! Kitchen is spic and span and the environment will thank you! (Make sure to switch to natural, fully biodegradable dish soap though).
Quando si lavano i piatti e si pulisce in cucina, si può optare per soluzioni che sono completamente biodegradabili! Le spugne riutilizzabili, lavabili e biodegradabili esistono (evviva!), quindi se credete che l’utilizzo di panni in tessuto per lavare i piatti e pulire la cucina non faccia per voi, potete comunque contare sulle prestazioni di una spugna che è completamente eco-compatibile e non crea rifiuti o danneggia l’ambiente. Per lavare le stoviglie invece, potete optare per una spazzola completamente compostabile, a cui basta cambiare solo la testina quando questa sarà usurata. Risultati garantiti! La cucina è bella pulita e l’ambiente vi ringrazierà! (Assicuratevi però di scegliere un sapone per piatti naturale e completamente biodegradabile).

Ditch that plastic bottled water!

Last but definitely not least. Break free from plastic bottled water! The amount of plastic waste generated by water bottles is insane. If tap water is fine to drink in your area, get yourself a water bottle to carry around and a carafe to use in your house. Otherwise, make sure to look for a brand of bottled water that comes in glass (preferably returnable) bottles.
Ultimo ma non meno importante. Liberatevi una volta per sempre dall’acqua in bottiglia di plastica! La quantità di rifiuti di plastica generati dalle bottiglie d’acqua è pazzesca. Se l’acqua del rubinetto è sicura da bere nella vostra zona, procuratevi una bottiglia riutilizzabile da portare con voi quando siete in giro ed una caraffa da riempire ed usare in casa. Altrimenti, assicuratevi di cercare una marca di acqua che sia in bottiglie di vetro (preferibilmente a rendere).
