(ENG/ITA) Adopting my cat, Ziggy Stardust, was without a doubt the best decision ever and the highlight of my 2020. She has brought joy fluffiness and color to our home and definitely brought a big change in our daily routines too. Sure, as an environmentalist I recognize that having a pet can become a big source of pollution (I’ve read online that the annual carbon emissions of a cat are slightly less than that of a small car). Not only are cats bug meat eaters, but they live after all in the world we created, which is full of plastic and disposables. Luckily, plenty can be done to make things more eco friendly while still giving full priority to the health and well being of our animals. In this blog post I am going to share with you how I achieved this so far.
Adottare la mia gatta, Ziggy Stardust, è stata senza dubbio la migliore decisione di sempre ed il culmine del mio 2020. Ha portato gioia, morbidezza e colore nella nostra casa e sicuramente anche un grande cambiamento nella nostra routine quotidiana. Certo, come ambientalista riconosco che avere un animale domestico può diventare una grande fonte non indifferente di inquinamento (ho letto online che le emissioni annuali di carbonio di un gatto sono leggermente inferiori a quelle di una piccola automobile). Non solo i gatti sono mangiatori di carne, ma vivono dopo tutto nel mondo che abbiamo creato noi, che è pieno di plastica e di usa e getta. Per fortuna, si può fare molto per rendere le cose più ecologiche pur dando piena priorità alla salute e al benessere dei nostri animali. In questo post condividerò con voi come ho raggiunto questo obiettivo finora.

Make your research
From the moment we found out we could adopt a kitten to the day we actually brought her home we only had a week. One single week. We made the impossible to make as much research as possible in order to be ready to welcome our new furry friend. Luckily you can find all sorts of information online through blogs and/or Youtube videos. If you never had a cat before, research is the first thing you need to tackle on your list. You need to know exactly what to do, learn on different types of food, toys, healthy habits and various care things for your cat and its growth, also according to what it is available to you in your area. The more you make research, the more you’ll be able to find alternative ways to ensure your cat a happy, healthy life while still giving a help to the environment.
Second hand first
When it comes to the essentials and the basics for your cat, don’t forget that P L E N T Y can be found easily second hand: Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, flea markets, etc. We personally bought almost all of Ziggy’s stuff second hand. Sure, this required a lot of research, but trust me it paid off a lot, both financially and personally speaking. Here’s a list of all the things we were able to source second hand so far for our cat, Ziggy Stardust:
- basket (that she can use as a kennel)

- old pillowcases, old clothes and old fabric scraps to line the basket and the wicker home and make them more comfy

Sourcing as much as you can second hand is already a great starting point, (if you do opt for second hand items, just make sure to clean and disinfect everything well, so you’ll get rid of all bacteria and also of the smell and hair left by previous cats, which ultimately can bother yours) but there is still a lot that you can do to make your cat care more eco friendly.

Fare adeguata ricerca
Dal momento in cui abbiamo scoperto che potevamo adottare un gattino al giorno in cui l’abbiamo portato a casa abbiamo avuto solo una settimana di tempo. Una sola settimana. Abbiamo fatto l’impossibile per fare più ricerche possibili per essere pronti ad accogliere nel migliore dei modi il nostro nuovo amico peloso. Per fortuna si possono trovare tutti i tipi di informazioni online attraverso blog e/o video di Youtube. Se non avete mai avuto un gatto prima, la ricerca di informazioni è la prima cosa da fare. Dovete sapere esattamente cosa fare, imparare su diversi tipi di cibo, giocattoli, abitudini sane da implementare e varie cose per la cura del vostro gatto e la sua crescita, anche in base a ciò che è disponibile nella vostra zona. Più farete ricerche, più sarete in grado di trovare modi alternativi per assicurare al vostro gatto una vita felice e sana, dando comunque un aiuto all’ambiente.
Prima la seconda mano
Non dimenticate che si possono facilmente trovare TANTISSIME cose di seconda mano: Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, mercati delle pulci, ecc. Personalmente abbiamo comprato quasi tutta la roba di Ziggy di seconda mano. Certo, questo ha richiesto qualche “sbattimento” in più, ma credetemi che ha ripagato molto, sia finanziariamente che da un punto di vista personale. Ecco una lista di tutte le cose che siamo riusciti a trovare di seconda mano finora per la nostra Ziggy Stardust:

Procurarsi quanto più possibile di seconda mano è già un ottimo punto di partenza (se optate per oggetti di seconda mano, assicuratevi solo di pulire e disinfettare tutto bene, così vi libererete di tutti i batteri e anche dell’odore e dei peli lasciati dai gatti precedenti, che possono dare fastidio al vostro), ma c’è ancora molto che potete fare per rendere la cura del vostro gatto più ecologica.

Eco friendly cat care: Plants
Surround yourself with cat friendly plants. The day before we picked up little Ziggy, we found out that 90% of the plants we had home were considered “toxic” for cats. As much as we loved our plants, we couldn’t risk to put our kitten at danger, so we donated them to a person who was just moving into our building. Catnip is a great plant to have around cats! They can snack on it with no health risk whatsoever, but many more are the plants that you can keep at home. Here you can find a complete list, both of the toxic and non toxic plants for cats.
Right now our Ziggy is too young and seems to be willing to destroy every single little or big plant we put on her path. As soon as she will grow up a little we’ll start rebuilding a plant collection she can also enjoy.
Cura eco friendly del gatto: Piante
Circondatevi di piante amiche dei gatti. Il giorno prima di andare a prendere Ziggy, abbiamo scoperto che il 90% delle piante che avevamo in casa erano considerate “velenose” per i gatti. Per quanto amassimo le nostre piante, non potevamo rischiare di mettere in pericolo la nostra gattina, così le abbiamo donate ad una persona che si era appena trasferita nel nostro palazzo. L’erba gatta è un’ottima pianta per gatti! Possono annusarla e masticarla senza correre alcun rischio rischio, ma molte altre sono le piante che si possono tenere in casa. Qui potete trovare una lista completa, sia delle piante velenose che di quelle non velenose per i gatti.
In questo momento la nostra Ziggy è troppo giovane e sembra voler distruggere ogni singola pianta piccola o grande che mettiamo in casa. Non appena crescerà un po’ inizieremo a ricostruire una collezione di piante di cui anche lei possa godere.
Eco friendly cat care: Ditch anything toxic
From the cleaning products to the fabrics and materials you use (blankets, stuffed animals, toys), try to reduce the amount of nasty chemicals, micro plastics or toxic ingredients/components your cat might get in touch with. Prefer eco friendly products to clean your home (remember that not only your cat will benefit from it, but also you!!), natural fabrics like cotton or linen for the kennel (old clothes, bed sheets and pillowcases, or big fabric scraps will do), plastic free toys. Keep in mind that cats tend to chew, lick, smell, sniff pretty much anything they encounter: make sure that you limit the sources of risk!

Dai prodotti per la pulizia ai tessuti e ai materiali che usate (coperte, peluche, giocattoli), cercate di ridurre la quantità di sostanze chimiche pericolose, micro plastiche o ingredienti/componenti tossici con cui il vostro gatto potrebbe entrare in contatto. Cercate di preferire prodotti ecologici per la pulizia (non solo il vostro gatto ne trarrà beneficio, ma anche voi!!), tessuti naturali come il cotone o il lino per la cuccia (vanno bene vecchi vestiti, lenzuola e federe, o grandi scarti di tessuto) e giocattoli senza plastica. Ricordate che i gatti tendono a masticare, leccare, odorare, annusare praticamente tutto ciò che incontrano. Limitate le probabilità di rischio!
Eco friendly cat care: Food
Unless you are able to purchase cat food in bulk, or cook it yourself (of course with the approval and support of a veterinary), you’ll need to rely on stores to source your cat food. But there are definitely some things you can do to reduce the environmental impact of it:
Cibo
A meno che non siate in grado di acquistarlo sfuso, o di cucinarlo voi stessi (ovviamente con l’approvazione e il supporto di un veterinario), dovrete affidarvi ai negozi per procurarvi il cibo per gatti. Ci sono però sicuramente alcune cose che potete fare per ridurne l’impatto ambientale:
- read the labels. ALWAYS read the labels because there’s no need to tell you that they put EVERYTHING and beyond into cat food. Do no trust the front label, but read the full ingredients’ list. You want your cat to be healthy, so buy your food accordingly. Just as you probably don’t like the idea of having a diet exclusively based on junk, processed foods with no nutritional value, your cat deserve to eat something that doesn’t contain any unpronounceable ingredient. If you can, buy organic (even better if it is locally sourced and produced!).
leggere le etichette. Leggete SEMPRE le etichette perché non c’è bisogno di dirvi che mettono di TUTTO e di più nel cibo per gatti. Non fidatevi dell’etichetta frontale, ma leggete la lista completa degli ingredienti. Se volete che il vostro gatto sia in salute, acquistate il suo cibo di conseguenza. Proprio come a voi probabilmente non piace l’idea di avere una dieta basata esclusivamente su cibo spazzatura, processato e senza valore nutritivo, il vostro gatto merita di mangiare qualcosa che non contenga nessun ingrediente impronunciabile o assurdo. Se potete, optate per il cibo bio (ancora meglio se di origine locale!). - avoid/reduce beef. You probably know by know that less meat and less animal products are good for the environment. If you are a vegan or vegetarian though be aware of the fact that you cannot feed your cat your same diet: cats are not meant to be vegan or vegetarian animals. They are meat eaters and they need meat protein to thrive. Since beef is the most wasteful type of meat to produce, you can decide to avoid/reduce it and rely (more) on poultry, pork or fish for your cat. They’ll still get their right amount of protein without damaging the environment too much.
evitare/ridurre la carne di manzo. Probabilmente sapete già che meno carne e meno prodotti animali fanno bene all’ambiente. Se siete vegani o vegetariani, però, sappiate che il vostro gatto non può seguire la vostra stessa dieta: i gatti non sono fatti per essere animali vegani o vegetariani. Sono mangiatori di carne e hanno bisogno di proteine della carne per crescere e vivere bene. Dato che la carne di manzo è il tipo di carne più dispendioso in termini di risorse da produrre, potete decidere di evitarla/ridurla e affidarvi (di più) a pollame, maiale o pesce. Il gatto riceverà comunque la giusta quantità di proteine senza danneggiare troppo l’ambiente. - the bigger, the better. If you cannot buy something in bulk/package free, bigger packagings are always the best way to reduce your (plastic) waste. Avoid those single portioned food packagings: sure they are convenient but if you have a kitchen scale you can easily achieve the same result, which is obtaining a single serving of food. When it comes to wet food my tip would be to opt for cans: now that Ziggy is still a kitten 200ml and 400ml cans are enough, but we’ll try to switch to 800ml when she’s older. Once opened, we store wet food in the fridge in a glass jar so so it stays fresh for days. I’ve read online that wet food can be frozen and then thawed as needed, we’ll see in the future if it works for our cat. Also, cans are fully recyclable in comparison to plastic, which is only partly recyclable and can’t be recycled over and over again. When it comes to dry food instead, I recommend to buy big resealable bags so you can minimize your waste, save money and keep the product fresh long term all at once.
Più grande è, meglio è. Se non potete comprare cibo sfuso, le confezioni più grandi sono sempre il modo migliore per ridurre i rifiuti (di plastica). Evitate le confezioni di porzioni singole: certo, sono comode, ma se avete una bilancia da cucina potete facilmente ottenere lo stesso risultato.
Per quanto riguarda il cibo umido preferite quello in scatole di latta: ora che Ziggy è ancora piccole le lattine da 200ml e 400ml sono sufficienti, ma magari proveremo a passare a quelle da 800ml quando sarà più grande. Una volta aperto, conserviamo l’umido in frigorifero in un barattolo di vetro con coperchio così rimane fresco per giorni. Ho letto online che l’umido può essere congelato e poi scongelato secondo le necessità, magari in futuro proverò a vedere se funziona con la nostra gattina. Le lattine sono completamente riciclabili rispetto alla plastica, che è solo parzialmente riciclabile e non può essere riciclata più e più volte. Per quanto riguarda i cibo secco, invece, consiglio di comprare sacchetti grandi richiudibili, in modo da minimizzare i rifiuti, risparmiare (di solito le confezioni grandi convengono) e mantenere allo stesso tempo il prodotto ben conservato a lungo termine. - plastic free dishes. Stainless steel ones are much more durable and easier to clean and maintain than plastic. I have bought three: one for dry food, one for wet food and one for water. Otherwise, ceramic ones are also a great plastic free options (although I recommend it less because they are more breakable).
ciotole plastic free. Le ciotole in acciaio sono molto più durevoli e più facili da pulire e mantenere rispetto alla plastica. Ne ho comprate tre: una per il cibo secco, una per il cibo umido e una per l’acqua. In alternativa, ci sono anche in ceramica (anche se personalmente le preferisco meno poiché più fragili). - keep in mind that your cat might not like it. As a newbie cat parent maybe you’ve spent about an hour in a pet store (been there, done that) to read the labels and choose the best food you could find. Then you bring it home and your cat doesn’t like it at all. It can totally happen! Don’t worry though, simply make a post online and donate it/sell it for a cheap price.
Tenete presente che al vostro gatto potrebbe non piacere il cibo che gli avete comprato. Magari siete stati un’ora a leggere le etichette sulle confezioni per assicurarvi di comprare il miglior cibo che siete stati in grado di trovare. Poi lo portate a casa e al vostro gatto non piace. Può assolutamente succedere! Non preoccupatevi però, basta fare un post online e donarlo/venderlo a poco prezzo.
Eco friendly cat care: Toys
Instead of buying cheap toys made of plastic that were most likely made in China, try to find some toys from sustainable brands (they’re probably more expensive but absolutely safe to play with for your cat), second hand or, even better, make them yourself. You can repurpose and upcycle so many things and make toys out of them! An easy example? We turned chop sticks into a toy by simply taping them together to form a longer stick, then we tied a long cotton thread to the stick and a pom pom to the thread so Ziggy can chase it, catch it, jump following it etc. Also, even empty toilet paper rolls make great toys! Use them plain, build something out of them and hide treats into them, look for simple tutorials that can turn cardboard, empty kitchen paper and toilet paper rolls into simple but fun toys. You just need some creativity and some few materials that you probably already have around the house! No need to waste money and precious resources to keep your cat happy and entertained.
Also, the important thing is to make time for your cat: make them play, cuddle with them when they want: it doesn’t matter which toy or entertainment you provide your cat, if it’s made with love and care it will make all the difference.
Cura del gatto eco friendly: Giochi
Invece di comprare giocattoli economici di plastica fatti in Cina, provate a trovare dei giocattoli sostenibili ed atossici di marchi sostenibili (magari costano un po’ di più ma saranno 100% sicuri per il vostro micio), di seconda mano o, ancora meglio, costruiteli voi. Si possono riutilizzare e riciclare così tante cose e trasformale in giocattoli! Un esempio facile? Abbiamo trasformato le bacchette del sushi take away in un giocattolo semplicemente attaccandole insieme per formare un bastone più lungo, poi abbiamo legato un lungo filo di cotone al bastone e un pom pom al filo, così Ziggy può inseguirlo, prenderlo, saltargli dietro ecc. Anche i rotoli di carta igienica vuoti sono ottimi giocattoli! Usateli semplici, costruiteci qualcosa e nascondeteci dentro degli snack, cercate semplici tutorial che trasformino cartone, carta da cucina vuota e rotoli di carta igienica in giocattoli semplici ma divertenti. Avete solo bisogno di un po’ di creatività e di alcuni materiali che probabilmente avete già in casa! Non c’è serve sprecare chissà quanti soldi e risorse preziose per rendere il vostro gatto felice.
Inoltre, l’importante è dedicare tempo al il vostro gatto: fatelo giocare, coccolatelo quando vuole: non importa quale giocattolo o intrattenimento gli date, se agite con amore e gli dedicherete le giuste cure ad attenzioni farà la differenza per il vostro animale.
Eco friendly cat care: Beds and accessories
Beds and accessories for cats are for the most part made of plastic. When choosing a bed, kennel or accessory for your cat (collar, harness etc.), try to choose materials that are plastic free and toxic free. If you can, buy them from sustainable companies, who pay attention to the production chain and the material used. In this way you’re sure that the production of these items was made environmentally consciously and you won’t worry about toxins or micro plastics your cat might get in touch with. This option is more expensive but it pays off in the long run. If buying new and sustainable is not in your budget, second hand comes to your rescue again: you can upcycle old baskets and use bed sheets, fabric scraps, old pillowcases or blankets, etc. (choose natural fibers such as cotton and linen) to make a padding. Otherwise, browse for second hand options to buy. As for the collar, same deal. Prefer sustainable companies and products that prioritize the environment and the pet’s health. A simple online search will give you the information you need on where to get them. Otherwise, buy used.

I letti e gli accessori per gatti sono per la maggior parte fatti di plastica. Quando scegliete una cuccia o un accessorio (collare, pettorina ecc.), cercate di scegliere materiali senza plastica e senza sostanze tossiche. Se potete, comprateli da aziende sostenibili, che fanno attenzione alla catena di produzione ed ai materiali utilizzati. In questo modo siete sicur* che la produzione di questi articoli è stata fatta in modo consapevole e non vi preoccuperete delle tossine o delle microplastiche con cui il vostro gatto potrebbe entrare in contatto. Questa opzione è più costosa ma alla lunga ripaga. Se comprare nuovo e sostenibile non rientra nel vostro budget, l’usato viene di nuovo in vostro soccorso: potete riciclare vecchie ceste ed usare lenzuola, scarti di tessuto, vecchie federe o coperte, ecc. (scegliete fibre naturali come il cotone e il lino) per fare un’imbottitura e rendere la cuccia comoda e calda. Altrimenti, cercate tra l’usato da acquistare. Per quanto riguarda il collare, stesso discorso. Preferite aziende e prodotti sostenibili che danno priorità all’ambiente ed alla salute degli animali. Una semplice ricerca online vi darà le informazioni necessarie su dove reperirli. Altrimenti comprate usato.
Eco friendly cat care: Droppings
First of all, litter. There are a lot of options on the market and from the very beginning I chose not to buy any clay-based litter and opted instead for 100% natural, fully biodegradable litter (“many mass market cat litters contain significant amounts of silica dust which has been linked to upper respiratory issues in cats and even humans. Likewise, the chemical fragrances in many cat litters can also be toxic to cats.”). In this way it is not an hazard in any way for me or my cat, it still absorbs her droppings (it actually clumps really well, making it easy to pick up poop and urine from her litter box) and absorbs odor too. But overall managing my cat’s feces is the part where personally I am having the most difficulties with so far. And here’s why. There seems to be a bit of controversy on this, but apparently cat’s dropping cannot be composted because they contain harmful bacteria (Toxoplasma gondii) that can be hazardous for soil and plants, especially if that soil is destined to grow food (BSR, one of Berlin’s waste management companies, clearly states on their website that cat’s feces or litter residue cannot be put in the organic waste bin). Cat droppings cannot be flushed in the toilet either because a) they can cause problem in the sewage system and b) the bacteria they contain are hazardous to the marine life. Also, the litter box needs to be cleaned often. So far the best thing I could do is:
Cura del gatto eco friendly: Lettiera
Fin dall’inizio io ho scelto di non comprare nessuna sabbia a base di argilla e ho optato invece per una sabbia 100% naturale e completamente biodegradabile (“molte sabbie per lettiera contengono quantità significative di polvere di silice che è stata collegata a problemi respiratori nei gatti ed anche negli esseri umani. Allo stesso modo, le fragranze chimiche in molte gabbiette per gatti possono anche essere tossiche per i gatti“). In questo modo non è un pericolo in alcun modo per me o per il mio gatto, assorbe e si raggruma bene, rendendo facile raccogliere gli escrementi ed assorbe gli odori. Purtroppo però la gestione degli escrementi è la parte in cui personalmente sto avendo più difficoltà finora. Ed ecco perché. Sembra che ci sia un po’ di controversia su questo, ma gli escrementi di gatto non possono essere compostati perché un batterio nocivo (Toxoplasma gondii) che può essere velenoso per terreno e piante, specialmente se quel terreno è destinato a coltivare cibo (BSR, una delle società di gestione dei rifiuti di Berlino, afferma chiaramente sul proprio sito che le feci di gatto o i residui della lettiera non possono essere messi nel bidone dei rifiuti organici). Gli escrementi di gatto non possono nemmeno essere gettati nel water perché a) possono causare problemi al sistema fognario e b) il Toxoplasma gondii è dannoso per l’ecosistema marino. Inoltre, la lettiera deve essere pulita spesso. Finora le cose migliori che ho potuto fare sono:
- use a stainless steel small shovel to clean the litter box. This is a one time purchase that won’t need any replacement in the future.
usare una paletta in acciaio per pulire la lettiera. Questo è un acquisto una tantum che non avrà bisogno di essere sostituito in futuro. - keep a small trash can (with lid! Toxo can be harmful for humans too!) close to the litter box I can directly put any droppings into. We tried to use the big trash can that we keep under the sink in the kitchen, but because we try to prevent waste and we separate it, we don’t need to take the general waste out very often. It smelled insanely bad and found ourselves having to take out half-full trash bags, which is more wasteful in my opinion than keeping separate trash cans. So trash can just for my cat’s dropping it is. The trash can is lined with small plastic bags, but as soon as they run out I’m going to try to find a better system (compostable trash bags or reusing paper bags, old magazine pages, etc.) and see how it works out.
tenere un bidoncino (con coperchio! il Toxo è dannoso anche per gli esseri umani!) vicino alla lettiera in cui posso gettare direttamente gli escrementi. Abbiamo provato ad usare il cestino dei rifiuti che teniamo sotto il lavandino in cucina, ma dato che cerchiamo di prevenire i rifiuti il più possibile e facciamo la differenziata, non abbiamo bisogno di gettare i rifiuti generici molto spesso. Purtroppo questo creava una puzza allucinante ed eravamo costretti a portare fuori i sacchi della spazzatura mezzi pieni (il che è più uno spreco, secondo me, che tenere bidoni separati). Il bidoncino per gli escrementi di Ziggy è per ora foderato con sacchetti di plastica, ma non appena li termino cercherò di trovare un sistema migliore (sacchetti per la spazzatura compostabili oppure riutilizzare sacchetti di carta, vecchie pagine di riviste, ecc.) e vedere come va. - buy the litter box second hand. Mine is made of plastic, so not ideal, but at least I haven’t bought it new. I know that there are stainless steel litter boxes, but they are insanely expensive considering their function (unless you find one second hand or you buy it from Amazon, which personally is no option for me).

Eco friendly cat care: Hair
Cat hair seems to stick EVERYWHERE. To get rid of it you don’t need to rely on those roller brushes with the disposable sticky paper. A velvety cushioned lint remover that you can reuse over and over again will get rid of the hair from your clothes and any cushioned/fabric lined surface. For all those surfaces that can’t be polished with this brush like floors or wooden furniture, a vacuum cleaner or a little dustpan and brush will do the job.

I peli di gatto sembrano attaccarsi OVUNQUE. Per liberarsene non c’è bisogno di affidarsi a quelle spazzole a rullo con la carta adesiva usa e getta. Una semplice spazzola con cuscinetto in simil-velluto rosso che potete riutilizzare più e più volte si sbarazzerà dei peli dai vostri vestiti e da qualsiasi superficie imbottita/foderata di tessuto. Per tutte quelle superfici che non possono essere lucidate con questa spazzola come i pavimenti o i mobili in legno, un aspirapolvere o scopa+paletta andranno benissimo.

Cats are very clean animals who spend a lot of time taking care of and washing themselves. It is not recommendable to bathe them often, unless they are particularly dirty (e.g. stray cats rescued from the street). If this is the case, you can choose a natural, eco friendly shampoo to wash them with. Also, something else I can recommend is a wooden brush with natural bristles. Every once in a while we brush our Ziggy with it so we can make her fur nice and shiny, gt rid of eventual knots and of some of the hair she’s inevitably losing already and give her a nice relaxing massage that she enjoys a lot.

I gatti sono animali molto puliti che passano molto tempo a prendersi cura di sé e lavarsi. Non è consigliabile fargli il bagno spesso, a meno che non siano particolarmente sporchi (ad esempio sono randagi salvati dalla strada). In questo caso, si può scegliere uno shampoo naturale e sostenibile per lavarli. Inoltre, consiglio vivamente una spazzola in legno con setole naturali e morbide. Di tanto in tanto la usiamo per spazzolare la nostra Ziggy, così da renderle il pelo lucido e privo di nodi, eliminare alcuni dei peli che inevitabilmente perde e darle allo stesso tempo un massaggio rilassante che a lei piace molto e che aiuta a rinforzare il nostro rapporto.

- glass covers for stove. If your stove doesn’t come with liftable cover you can cover the burners after use with, I recommend investing into heath resistant glass plates. They aren’t particularly expensive but are a huge help to prevent unpleasant burns (especially if you have electric burners or induction ones).

Se il vostro piano cottura non è dotato di un coperchio sollevabile con cui poter coprire i fuochi dopo l’uso, vi consiglio di investire in piastre di copertura in vetro resistenti al calore. Of course, make regular check ups to the vet, but investing in a good cat health insurance is also pretty important. If your little furry friend needs to be operated, the insurance will cover the cost and you’ll be able to take full care of your cat.

This a completely free but very effective option. Play a relaxing music playlist made especially for cats (on Spotify or Youtube) so they can relax, calm down and enjoy some quiet time.
musica per gatti. Questa è un’opzione completamente gratuita ma molto efficace. Potete riprodurre una playlist di musica rilassante fatta apposta per gatti (su Spotify o Youtube) in modo che possano rilassarsi, calmarsi e godersi un po’ di tempo tranquillo.
So far this is everything I have kept into consideration and done for the care of my cat. For sure there are things that I can change and do better at, but overall I think this is already a really good achievement. If you are planning to adopt a cat (please adopt, don’t shop!!) I hope these tips will help you plan things out. If you already have a cat and you want to make a few changes, start with what you own and make slowly your way towards a sustainable care routine: big changes never happen overnight and wasting everything you already own to go ahead and buy everything new would be more wasteful. Also, cats are creatures of habit and need time to adjust to changes: give them enough time to adapt to your decisions. Overall is their well being that matters the most! If something doesn’t work as hoped or planned, make adjustments accordingly but always prioritize their well being.
Finora questo è tutto ciò che ho tenuto in considerazione e fatto per la cura della mia gattina. Sicuramente ci sono cose che posso cambiare e fare meglio, ma nel complesso penso che questo sia già un ottimo risultato. Se state pensando di adottare un gatto (vi prego adottate, non comprate!!) spero che questi consigli vi aiutino a pianificare al meglio le cose. Se invece avete già un gatto e volete implementare qualche cambiamento, usate quello che già avete a disposizione e fatevi strada lentamente verso una routine più sostenibile: i grandi cambiamenti non avvengono mai da un giorno all’altro e sprecare tutto quello che già possiedi per andare avanti e comprare tutto nuovo sarebbe più dispendioso. Inoltre, i gatti sono animali molto abitudinari ed hanno bisogno di tempo per adattarsi ai cambiamenti: date loro il tempo di adattarsi alle vostre decisioni. Alla fine è il loro benessere che conta di più! Se qualcosa non funziona come sperato o pianificato, fermatevi un attimo e vedete cos’altro potete fare, ma date sempre priorità al loro benessere.
