(ENG/ITA) I don’t know about you, but I love Christmas. I am not a religious person and I don’t believe in God, so I detached myself from the religious meaning of Christmas a long time ago (I received a Christian education, but at the age of 18-19 I decided that it wasn’t for me). What always stuck with me though is the whole atmosphere Xmas is able to bring every year. As I see it, Chrismas is all about appreciating the little things, being joyful more playful and silly, spending time with those we love, being kind to ourselves as we look back at the year that is coming to an end and we prepare for the one ahead. I personally don’t care at all about presents or the material aspect of the holiday season either, I care about how I spend my time and with whom. In German there’s the word “Vorfreude” which means the joy of anticipation. This is what Christmas is to me. And decorating, of course, is part of the process too.
Non so voi, ma io amo il Natale. Non sono una persona religiosa e non credo in Dio, quindi mi sono distaccata dal significato religioso del Natale molto tempo fa (ho ricevuto un’educazione cristiana, ma all’età di 18-19 anni ho deciso che non faceva per me). Quello che però mi è sempre rimasto impresso è tutta l’atmosfera che il Natale riesce a portare con sé ogni anno. Per come la vedo io, il Natale consiste nell’apprezzare le piccole cose, nell’essere gioiosi e giocosi, nel passare del tempo con coloro che amiamo, nell’essere gentili con noi stessi mentre guardiamo indietro all’anno che sta per finire e ci prepariamo per quello che verrà. Personalmente non mi interessano nemmeno i regali o il materialismo delle festività natalizie, ma mi interessa come passo il mio tempo e con chi. In tedesco c’è la parola “Vorfreude” che significa la gioia dell’attesa. Questo è ciò che il Natale è per me. E anche decorare, naturalmente, fa parte dell’attesa.

I don’t really have place for a Xmas tree in my tiny studio and even if I did, things would probably get complicated considering with whom I live with 😂 so I used old cds and sticked them to the door in a tree shape. I then added an old star-shaped decor piece I already had as a tree topper.
L’albero. Non ho decisamente spazio per un albero di Natale nel mio minuscolo monolocale e anche se ce l’avessi, le cose si complicherebbero considerando con chi vivo 😂 così ho usato vecchi cd e li ho attaccati alla porta a forma di albero. Ho poi aggiunto una decorazione a forma di stella che avevo già come “punta” dell’albero.

Lucine. Le amo così tanto che ne tengo alcune tutto l’anno in casa. Ma quando è Natale, più sono, meglio è.

I bought two simple and plain red pillowcases and used this throw blanket that my mom bought when I was a kid to change the look of my bed. I also had this christmassy second hand fabric which I made alter to turn it into a table cloth.
Tessili. Ho comprato due semplici federe rosse e ho usato una coperta che mia mamma ha comprato quando ero piccola per dare un aspetto diverso al mio letto. Avevo anche questo tessuto natalizio di seconda mano che ho fatto sistemare da una sarta per trasformarlo in una tovaglia.

I bought some individually wrapped chocolates and created an advent calendar using a paper bag (which I turned into 24 small envelopes), some xmas themed stickers and a big glass jar.
Calendario dell’avvento fai da te. Ho comprato dei cioccolatini incartati singolarmente e ho creato un calendario dell’avvento usando un sacchetto di carta (che ho trasformato in 24 piccole buste), alcuni adesivi a tema natalizio e un grande vaso di vetro.
Simple and eco friendly decor in my studio apartment: small decorative elements
I’ve added small decorative accents here and there using items that I had already, that I upcycled or even bought new but that I know that I’ll keep using for the years to come. For example a jar full of biscuits, a fake poinsettia flower, or an empty cookie tin box with a gorgeous design on it that I turned it into a candle stand.
Piccoli elementi decorativi. Ho aggiunto piccoli accenti decorativi qua e là usando oggetti che avevo già, che ho riciclato o anche comprato nuovi ma che so che continuerò a usare negli anni a venire. Per esempio un barattolo pieno di biscotti, una Stella di Natale finta, o una scatola vuota di latta per biscotti con un bellissimo disegno sopra che ho trasformato in un portacandele.

I like the idea of Christmas décor not being just “visual” but multi-sensory. I’m using “winter scented” candles (vegetable wax so they’re safe and toxic free) that bring both the “hygge” and festive element and the nice pleasant scent. Also enjoying some festive and “winter-y” foods or beverages is for me part of the whole decorative experience as well, for example chestnuts, anything cinnamon-y, or a pumpkin spiced latte.
Odori. Mi piace l’idea che le decorazioni natalizie non siano solo “visive” ma multisensoriali. Uso candele profumate “invernali” (cera vegetale, quindi sono sicure e senza sostanze tossiche) che portano sia l’elemento “hygge” e festivo che il piacevole profumo. Anche gustare cibi o bevande festivi e “invernali” è per me parte dell’intera esperienza decorativa, per esempio le castagne, qualsiasi cosa alla cannella, o un latte aromatizzato alla zucca.

This year I really couldn’t resist to the Xmas sweater thing. I spotted this sweatshirt on Vinted and thought it would be absolutely perfect for me to rock it in my xmas decorated studio.
“L’essenziale” da indossare. Quest’anno non ho potuto davvero resistere al maglione di Natale. Ho visto questa felpa su Vinted e ho pensato che sarebbe stata assolutamente perfetta da indossare nel mio monolocale decorato per Natale (e non solo).

One of my favorite things about Xmas? The music, of course. You can have the nicest decorated place but without music, you’re missing that festive vibe that really brings it all together. I have my own personal playlist that is 100% fail proof in setting me into the right mood. Not your typical xmas playlist, but much better. La musica a tema. Una delle cose che preferisco del Natale? Le canzoni natalizie, naturalmente. Puoi avere il posto più bello e decorato, ma senza musica, ti manca quell’atmosfera di festa che mette tutto insieme. Ho la mia playlist personale mi mette sempre nello stato d’animo giusto.
