(ENG/ITA) Second hand is now really within everyone’s reach. Just a couple of clicks and you can buy anything used at any price.

Fashion has a lot to offer in terms of second. Because of the ever increasing hunger for purchases and the hyper-consumerist system that fast fashion brands fuel, the world is literally saturated with clothes. Too bad the average consumer tends to wear about 20% of their closet. Only 20%.

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to have a more sustainable closet is to buy second hand. But while the availability of thrift stores may not be there for everyone, just as the range of clothes on offer in thrift stores may not always be inclusive or satisfactory for everyone, buying online instead allows everyone to easily find what they are looking for. On dedicated websites or through apps, such as Vinted, eBay, Depop, etc. .

The benefits of buying on apps like Vinted

Vinted (in Germany it was first known as Kleiderkreisel) is an app that allows you to buy and sell (between privates) used clothing and accessories (but also small household items and books). All it takes is a few photos, a brief description of the product and a price. It’s like a flea market, but online. And the interface is very intuitive, making the shopping experience easy and fuss-free.

The benefits of buying on Vinted:

• second hand fashion easily accessible to anyone with a smartphone
• wide range of products, much more than a single store can offer
• possibility to search by specific criteria (brand, size, color, category, product condition, etc.)
• modest prices (usually you haggle, just as you would at a flea market) or, in the case of more expensive brands, very competitive and advantageous prices
• possibility to find unique items of all kinds, which usually would not be found in stores

But how do you buy WELL on Vinted? Here’s how I do it.

How to buy well on Vinted

Have a precise idea of what you are looking for. Opening the app without having an idea of what you are looking for is like going to an all-you-can-eat restaurant, in my opinion: you fill your plate without having an idea of how hungry you are and what you really want. The great availability and the tendentially low prices can fascinate, of course. But, as for any intelligent purchase, you need to have an idea of what you are looking for, otherwise you risk buying random things and on impulse that you didn’t need or didn’t really want.

Have a good idea of your size(s). If you don’t know your body well and the sizes you really need, buying online can be a big risk. Also by buying from a private vendor on an app there is no chance to return things. So if you buy something “wrong” then you have to keep it, or anyway it’s up to you to resell it, give it away or fix it, if possible. For the first few times, go for brands that you already know well and that you know already how they fit you. And above all, study well your body and what size(s) you usually wear.

Searching by filters. Once you have a more or less precise idea of what you are looking for, it is time to move on to the search. Type of garment, brand, size, color, condition, price. The more filters you put, the more precise the results will be. Use as many filters as you deem necessary, you always have time to add or remove them as your search goes on.

Garment hunt. This is when I scroll through the photos. Although I’ve only been actively buying on Vinted since last year, I’ve been buying second hand clothes for many years so I know exactly what’s worth the purchase and what’s not. I don’t consider things that I think are overpriced for the item I’m looking for. Just as I don’t consider items that have insufficient photos, unclear, out of focus, etc. If someone wants to sell their clothes, they need to take the time to curate the ad, otherwise I will gladly move onto something else and not waste my time.
If something catches my eye, I look at the price and description. Anything that might interest me I add to my favorites so I can re-evaluate later.

Take sufficient time. Sometimes it happens that you quickly find what you are looking for. But more often than not the search for something second hand takes time. It’s very rare that I buy right away. And most importantly, when it comes to used stuff, I check the condition of the item carefully. Since by buying online I can’t see it for myself, I make sure to look closely at the photos, study the garment and read the descriptions well.

Wait to think about it. Since this isn’t a thrift store or charity shop, buying on Vinted allows me to wait and see if the next day or a few days later I still feel like REALLY buying that garment. I take time to think it through and reserve the right to reconsider. If that’s the case, I remove the item from my list of favorites. If I am still interested and the item is still available, I proceed to contact the seller. If I’m interested but it’s no longer available, well it wasn’t meant to be. But no worries, there’s surely something else waiting for me!

Haggle. So far I have never bought through the app directly. I prefer to contact the seller and haggle over the price, often I can save a little something on shipping. Clearly I make offers that are not absurd, but that are sustainable for me (i.e. within my budget) and that are reasonable for the seller. I always receive positive feedback and the negotiation precedes quickly.

Purchase. Generally, once the price is set, I prefer to pay immediately (usually PayPal Friends) so that the whole transaction is faster. I also provide the shipping address making sure there are no typos in it (it seems ridiculous to say, but since you’re typing everything via smartphone, it is not uncommon that there may be typos or mistakes!).

Try on, wash and… wear! So far, I’ve never had any major problems with the purchases I’ve made. I always try them on right away, as soon as I receive them, so I know for sure if what I bought fits me or not. That way I can also verify that no alterations are needed (e.g. jeans to be made a little shorter). Of course, I wash everything, even if the clothes smell like fabric softener. It’s still used stuff and I always prefer, for hygienic reasons, to wash everything myself.
The last thing left to do is welcome my “new” item into my wardrobe and give it a new life!

Il second hand ormai è davvero alla portata di tutt*. Bastano un paio di click per poter acquistare qualunque cosa di usato a qualunque prezzo.

Quello della moda è un campo in cui il second hand ha davvero molto da offrire. Complice la fame di acquisti ed il sistema iperconsumistico che i marchi fast fashion alimentano, il mondo è saturo di vestiti. Peccato che il consumatore medio tende ad indossare circa il 20% del proprio armadio. Solo il 20%.

Uno dei modi piú facili ed economici per avere un armadio piú sostenibile é comprare second hand. Ma mentre la disponibilità di negozi dell’usato può non esserci per tutt*, così come l’offerta di abiti nei negozi dell’usato può non essere sempre inclusiva o soddisfacente per tutt*, comprare online permette invece a chiunque di trovare facilmente ciò che si sta cercando. Su siti dell’usato o tramite app, come Vinted, eBay, Depop ecc. .

I vantaggi di comprare su app come Vinted

Vinted (in Germania era prima conosciuta come Kleiderkreisel) è un’app che consente proprio di fare compra-vendita (tra privati) di abiti ed accessori usati (ma anche di articoli per la casa e libri). Bastano alcune foto, una breve descrizione del prodotto ed un prezzo di vendita. Come un mercatino delle pulci, peró online. E l’interfaccia è molto intuitiva, rendendo così l’esperienza d’acquisto facile e senza complicazioni.

I vantaggi di comprare su Vinted:

• moda second hand accessibile facilmente a chiunque abbia uno smartphone
• offerta di prodotti vastissima, molto di piú di quella che un singolo negozio puó offrire
• possibilità di cercare tramite criteri specifici (marca, taglia, colore, categoria, stato del prodotto, ecc.)
• prezzi modici (di solito si contratta, proprio come si farebbe ad un mercatino delle pulci) o comunque, in caso di marchi più costosi, prezzi molto concorrenziali e vantaggiosi
• possibilità di trovare capi unici e di ogni tipo, che solitamente non si troverebbero nei negozi

Ma come si fa a comprare BENE su Vinted? Ecco come faccio io.

Come acquistare bene su Vinted

Avere un’idea precisa di ciò che si sta cercando. Aprire l’app senza avere un’idea di ciò che si sta cercando è come andare a mangiare in un ristorante all you can eat, secondo me: ci si riempie il piatto senza avere un’idea di quanta fame si ha e di cosa realmente abbiamo voglia. La grande disponibilità ed i prezzi tendenzialmente bassi possono affascinare, certo. Ma per ogni acquisto intelligente serve avere un’idea di ciò che si sta cercando, altrimenti rischiate di comprare cose a caso e d’impulso che non vi servivano o che non volevate davvero.

Avere un’idea precisa della/e propria/e taglia/e. Se non conoscete bene il vostro corpo e le taglie che realmente vi servono, comprare online può essere un rischio grosso. Anche perché comprando da privati su un app non c’è diritto di recesso. Quindi se comprate qualcosa di “sbagliato” poi ve lo dovete tenere, o comunque sta a voi rivenderlo, regalarlo o aggiustarlo, se possibile. Per le prime volte, orientatevi su marchi che conoscete già bene e che sapete come vi vestono. E soprattutto studiate bene il vostro corpo e quali taglie indossate di solito.

La ricerca per filtri. Una volta che vi siete fatt* un’idea più o meno precisa di ciò che cercate, è il momento di passare alla ricerca. Tipo di indumento, marca, taglia, colore, condizioni, prezzo. Più filtri metterete, più avrete risultati circoscritti e precisi. Usate quanti filtri ritenete necessari, fate sempre in tempo ad aggiungerli o toglierli al bisogno.

La caccia all’indumento. Questo è il momento in cui si scorrono le foto. Nonostante io compri attivamente su Vinted solo dall’anno scorso, sono tanti anni che compro abiti usati quindi so riconoscere bene cosa vale la spesa e cosa no. Non prendo in considerazione cose che secondo me hanno un prezzo spropositato per l’articolo che sto cercando. Così come non prendo in considerazione gli articoli che hanno foto insufficienti, poco chiare, fuori fuoco ecc. Se qualcun* vuole vendere i propri vestiti, deve prendersi la briga di curare l’annuncio, altrimenti io passo volentieri ad altro e non perdo tempo.
Se qualcosa attira la mia attenzione, guardo prezzo e descrizione. Tutto ciò che mi può interessare lo aggiungo ai miei preferiti, così in un secondo momento posso rivalutare.

Prendere sufficiente tempo. A volte capita di trovare rapidamente ciò che si cerca. Ma spesso e volentieri la ricerca di qualcosa second hand richiede tempo. E’ molto raro che io compri subito. E soprattutto, quando si tratta di usato, controllo bene lo stato del capo. Dato che comprando online non posso vederlo con i miei occhi, mi assicuro di guardare bene le foto, studiare il capo e leggere bene le descrizioni.

Aspettare. Dato che non si tratta di un negozio dell’usato o di un charity shop, comprare online mi permette di aspettare e vedere se il giorno dopo o alcuni giorni dopo ancora ho voglia di comprare DAVVERO quell’indumento. Mi prendo tempo per pensarci bene e mi riservo il diritto di ripensarci. Se questo è il caso, elimino il capo dalla lista dei preferiti. Se mi interessa ancora e il prodotto è ancora disponibile, procedo a contattare chi vende. Se mi interessa ma non è più disponibile, beh si vede che non era destino. Pazienza, si può trovare qualcos’altro!

Contrattare. Finora non ho mai comprato tramite l’app direttamente. Preferisco contattare chi vende e contrattare sul prezzo, spesso e volentieri si può risparmiare qualcosina sulla spedizione. Chiaramente faccio proposte di prezzo non assurde ma che siano sostenibili per me (cioè che rientrino nel mio budget) e che siano plausibili per chi vende. Solitamente ricevo sempre feedback positivi e la trattativa precede in fretta.

Acquistare. Generalmente, una volta che il prezzo è stato fissato, preferisco pagare subito (di solito PayPal Friends) così da rendere la transazione più rapida. Fornisco anche l’indirizzo di spedizione accertandomi che non ci siano errori (sembra banale ribadirlo, ma dato che si da tutto tramite smartphone, non è raro che ci possano essere typo!).

Provare, lavare e… indossare! Finora non ho mai avuto grossi problemi con gli acquisti fatti. Provo sempre e subito, appena li ricevo, in modo da sapere con certezza se quello che ho comprato mi sta bene o meno. Così posso anche verificare che non siano necessarie modifiche dalla sarta (ad es. jeans da accorciare). Ovviamente, lavo tutto, anche se gli abiti profumano di ammorbidente. Trattasi comunque di roba usata e preferisco sempre, per motivi igienici, lavare tutto personalmente.
L’ultima cosa che resta da fare è dare il benvenuto nel mio guardaroba al mio “nuovo” capo e dargli una nuova vita!
